Family Therapy

According to an Albanian proverb, 'No problem is an orphan', which summarizes in short that all psychological difficulties in human life are embedded in a relational web which they construct and are constructed by. Problems are seen in a relational context and not as specific to one problematic individual, and we work with relationships through a combined understanding of the family and of their difficulties. As is said, it takes two to understand the one: who we are is understood only when we consider our closest relationships. Relational patterns of interaction within a family are also influenced by wider culture and inter-generational expectations.

Most families come for therapy already knowing what is wrong and wanting the therapist to do something about it. It is common for parents to want the therapist to prevent their child from doing something, or to convince them to do something else. They would have tried the same themselves at home but failed to find a solution. As therapy goes on, family members begin to see that their understanding and behaviour are connected to each other, and that the problem usually is not in one individual's behaviour but is a function of communication and interaction within the family.
